Can I Legally Insure a Car Bought in One Country (France, Japan, Mexico) with Regular Protection Insurance in Another Co

Unread post by Insu_agent »

Most likely not, except when the insurance company of your choice has a registration in the country where you purchased the car and are going to drive it. In the EU, when that company is registered in one member country, it can also operate in another member country when it is allowed to do so (needs some extra administrative steps to be taken).

So you will have to find an international insurer who is registered as such in the EU.

Another important thing … to drive a car, you need a license plate, and all depends on your individual case and you personal intentions or plans.

So, you can’t just ask a question without being very specific .. there is no universal rule …

I can give you some legal sources about the possible foreign insurance companies to work in Belgium (and with the correct procedures even in the whole EU) :

Does my firm need prior approval from the FSMA to pursue ‘insurance distribution activities’?

• Yes: insurance distribution is a licensed activity: no activities may be carried out without a valid registration from the FSMA, and can be penalised by administrative and criminal sanctions.

Does my firm need to be established in Belgium?

• Yes: the firm’s HQ must be located in Belgium and the firm must obtain a Belgian company number.

For Belgium, the easiest way for a foreigner is to get a transit license plate through a company that specialised in it, example :

AUTO TRANSIT - EXPORT PLATES BRUSSELS

Be aware, those are private companies, they DO NOT issue the license plates, they will act as your intermediate in your name. Issuing of license plates is the sole authority of the Belgian DIV: City Atrium - Rue du Progrès 60 - 1210 Brussels, a government institution.

Some info on those export plates (or plates to be used in Belgium on a temporary basis) :

Some additional info (like VAT tax on new cars but not on ‘ used ‘ cars rules, import duties, .. ) in the EU :

Sometimes, foreign insurances do cover a stay in some foreign countries, you should check your national insurance papers (green card where those countries are indicated). In such a case, you inform your insurance company that you have bought a new car and have it transferred (if that is possible in your country).

Example :

The countries with the x mark aren’t covered (this can change or differ depending the insurance company and the national laws). This card will be (or already partially is) cancelled and replaced by a digital registration and a white paper to take with you in the car (but no longer a legal mandated requirement).

Fun is like life insurance; the older you get, the more it costs.
